This past April the Asheville School community had the chance to welcome the honorable Lou Bissette to our campus. Mr. Bissette has distinguished himself throughout the community of Asheville by serving as mayor from 1985-1989, being the Board Secretary of the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce, and by establishing his own law firm in Asheville with which he has practiced for many years. He has also made himself known throughout the state of North Carolina by being the Vice Chairman for Carolina Alliance Bank, the Vice Chairman for the University of North Carolina Board of Governors, and by serving on the Board of Trustees at Wake Forest University. Lou Bissette has dedicated himself, and his life, to bettering the communities around him and to making sure that he left every place he went just a little bit better than he found it, which is why Asheville School presented him with the Award of Merit. As Mr. Bissette pointed out in his acceptance speech all one can do to have a successful life is to 1. Live a life you can be proud of 2. Do your best and 3. Become the best version of yourself. Lou Bissette has accomplished these goals and made himself indispensable in the communities that he has chosen to be a part of because he is always striving to be the best he can be. Lou Bissette kept his speech short and sweet with the main message being that we all define our own versions of success, however, it is our responsibility to measure up to those definitions and live our best lives. A very admirable recipient of the Award of Merit, Lou Bissette has set an example for our community and for our society as a whole as to how to get more out of the lives we live and contribute to the world around us.
