Before Spring Break, students were able to participate in World Awareness Day at Asheville School. In the morning, students watched Planet Earth II, a new version of the BBC’s original series. Students learned not only about the animals that call the islands of the world home, but also the impact invasive species have on these special microbiomes. Given that invasive species are often introduced by humans, it was a fitting start to the day’s events, which primarily focused on the human impact on the natural world. Students attended workshops both in the morning and the afternoon, with topics ranging from the EPA in the Trump Administration, to the current standoff over the Dakota Access Pipeline. While the day centered around sustainably and climate awareness, other topics were also discussed in the various workshops, such as the lasting effects of the Reagan Administration on American society. To continue with the theme of sustainability, the lunch was healthy and sustainable as well.

Off-campus visitors included Ms. Ranson’s parents, who led the aforementioned “EPA in the Trump Administration” workshop and members of the Asheville Electric Car Club. No matter what activities the students decided to do, they came away with knowledge of a topic they had not previously known about, and were grateful that they were not baby iguanas in the Galápagos.
